LOS ANGELES — Following the second night of the Democratic presidential debate in Detroit, MI, Marielena Hincapié, executive director of the National Immigration Law Center Immigrant Justice Fund, released the following statement:

“The Trump administration is decimating our legal immigration system. It’s not enough to decry the current state; candidates must commit to bold solutions. This includes decriminalizing migration, dismantling an enforcement system that wastes billions of taxpayer dollars to detain and deport immigrant families, and creating real opportunities for immigrants to contribute fully to their communities.

“While the chaos and cruelty of Trump’s immigration policies continue to dominate the headlines, tonight we saw candidates discuss years of a dysfunctional immigration system that included mass deportations carried out by previous administrations.

“People seeking freedom and safety in our country isn’t new, which is why American voters are hungry for a candidate who has a bold, multifaceted plan for our immigration system that will allow all Americans to thrive.”
